Frequently Asked Questions

Why do the council want to put Gypsy's in Deeping ?
The council have a legal requirement to provide permanent sites for travellers. This is enforced by the government and the council cannot ignore the law. (To change the law you need to contact your MP but this is a separate matter). The consultation process is designed to find out if the potential sites in Deeping are suitable. If you can show that they do not fit the council's criteria then the sites cannot go ahead here.

Where can I get a copy of the criteria list ?
We can supply you with one should you wish it. See contact detail below.

Can I put down my own objections on the form ?
Yes but if they are not related to the list of criteria it may not count. If you are unsure whether any other criteria you want to use may count or not please either contact the Deepings Community Group (dgcupdate@deepings.com or Tel 07912 374643) for advice. Please remember if the objections are considered by SKDC to be inappropriate then the form will not be counted.

Is it only one form per household ?
No this is a public consultation, this means that any member of the Public can complete and return a form no matter what their age, they are particularly keen to hear the views of young people.

Why should I bother to fill in the forms the council already know how we feel, we all went to the meeting ?
The strength of feeling demonstrated by the number of people who attended the public meetings helps to demonstrate the quantity of people who have concerns but does not help to demonstrate key planning objections, this public consultation is part of the legal process for doing this.
It is therefore vital that everyone submits properly completed forms indicating what (if anything) they support about the process and what they object to or are concerned about.

Can I send this form off myself ?
Yes the address is:

Planning Policy Team
South Kesteven District Council
Council Offices,
St Peters Hill
Grantham,
Lincolnshire,
NG31 6PZ

Why can't I put house prices as a reason for objecting ?
The objections must relate to the councils criteria for selecting sites. House prices are not on that list. The only way this can be taken into account is if falling house prices in the area as a whole have a detrimental effect on the economic viability of the town.

It won't make any difference the council has already made it's mind up.
The decision cannot be made until after 14th Sept . The more legal objections we can submit the less likely we are to end up with the site in Deepings.

The council have brought all the proposed sites so it won't make any difference.
Lincolnshire county council do own the showground site but this is not the district council. We believe there has never been a case where the county council have let district council use their land.
The other sites have not been purchased to date.

I'm worried about an increase in crime in the area?
While we understand your concerns this is an area that needs to be phrased carefully so as not to appear racist. We cannot automatically assume that all Gypsies & Travellers will behave anti-socially there are good and bad people in all races. It may be better to concentrate your comments on the limited police resources we have in Deeping.

I am concerned about the impact on our over stretched services such as schools, health services, emergency services, public transport, shops, etc.
These are legitimate concerns and relate to the infrastructure available to support new development. We have given an example of how to respond re this issue in our guide to completing the form.

What will the council do if I don't pay my council tax as a form of protest.
Council Tax is levied on residents by the District Council. Councils have a number of remedies available to them to recover unpaid Council Tax including court action, bailiffs, and imprisonment. We would strongly advise you do not object by with-holding payment of your Council Tax.

Can I complete a form and remain anonymous?
No - you must give your name and address for the form to be validated. The Council will compile the responses they get into a report and this will give your name and comments. Your address would only be released if someone made a specific request under the Freedom of Information Act or Data Protection requirements.
